Beginnings: From inscriptions to print

Water colored facsimile of ancient Egyptian relief, from temple of Seti I at Abydos

This section traces the development of writing and print through a selection of exceptional items in the AUC Libraries' collections. The exhibit begins with two examples of inscriptions, then moves on to examples of manuscripts, and to fine examples of early printed books.

The materials in this section are familiar, paper-based objects. The typewriters belong to this section, because they produce print on paper, but they are complex machines, and represent a turning point in the use of technology.
